Vehicle fire sends 87 into action.

By Firefighter Martin Palla
February 4, 2010

This evening Westmoreland 911 activated station 87 for a vehicle fire at the intersection of Rt 130 and Pleasant Valley Rd. As the call was dispatched a unit from Penn Township ambulance arrived to find a working fire in the engine compartment of a passenger car. The car was parked in the parking lot of the CVS pharmacy. Efforts to extinguish the fire by a passerby with a fire extinguisher failed and the fire continued to burn.
Within minutes Engine 87 arrived and a hoseline was stretched to extinguish the fire. The operator of Engine 87 hooked up the department's foam inductor to achieve a more efficient knockdown on the fire. The hose crew forced the hood and extinguished the fire before the fire could reach the passenger compartment of the vehicle.
All 87 units were clear within 30 min and the scene was turned over to the Penn Township Police.

Units: Engine 87, Rescue 87, Command 87, Penn Township Ambulance, and Penn Township Police.
