Harrison City V.F.D. - A Brief History
The Harrison City V.F.D. was the first volunteer fire department organized in this small community situated in Penn Township Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The residents of Harrison City were made keenly aware of the need for adequate fire protection and made the decision to organize on March 29, 1926 shortly after a disastrous fire. After a temporary organization was formed, the Harrison City Fire Protective Association was born on May 4, 1926.
The fledgling fire company petitioned the Westmoreland County Courts for corporate status on August 24, 1926. On October 29, 1926 the charter for the fire company was approved and the fire department was officially on its way. In the latter part of 1927, the fire department took steps to acquire permanent housing for its firefighting equipment and provide a central point from which to conduct its operations. On August 16, the fire company purchased the property upon which the social hall, the Harrison Room, now stands.
Since then, the Harrison City Fire Department has grown into a sophisticated and highly effective firefighting organization serving the residents of Penn Township and surrounding communities. In that time, we have been served by the following 11 fire chiefs:
Clarence A. King
